Mark Speck is a Nuclear Safety Consultant at Talisman. He has over 30 years of experience in the nuclear industry, including service in the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and the U.S. Navy nuclear submarine program. Before retiring from the NRC in 2016, Mr. Speck served as a Senior Technical Training Specialist training new NRC inspectors and overseeing contractor-provided training in root cause investigation techniques and analysis. Additionally, he maintained proficiency as an operations/resident inspector, emergency preparedness inspector, and performed start-up inspection activities at Watts Bar Unit 2. He served as a PWR Resident Inspector at the Sequoyah Nuclear Plant for seven years and as a Senior Emergency Preparedness Inspector, performing all EP inspections and related regulatory activities for NRC Region II. Prior to his NRC career, Mr. Speck served on the faculties of Vanderbilt University, the Naval Postgraduate School, and Nashville State Technical Community College. Mr. Speck also completed a career as a nuclear-trained Navy submarine officer, retiring with the rank of Commander.
Mr. Speck received a B.A. in Physics from St. Mary’s College, an M.S. in Technology from East Tennessee State University and an M.S. in Telecommunications Systems Management from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Ca.
