Marty Virgilio is a Senior Nuclear Regulatory Consultant at Talisman. He also serves as a consultant to several domestic electric generating companies advising Board of Directors, Chief Nuclear Officers and other senior officials on nuclear, radiological, industrial and environmental safety. He assesses the performance of nuclear power reactors against domestic standards and industry best practices and makes specific recommendations for improvement. He has more than 40 years of nuclear safety experience, including senior level positions at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Prior to his retirement from the NRC, he served as the Deputy Executive Director for Reactor and Preparedness Programs. In this capacity, Mr. Virgilio led the Offices of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, New Reactors, Nuclear Security and Incident Response and NRC’s four Regional Offices and was responsible for ensuring nuclear safety, security, emergency preparedness and incident response. Prior to that assignment, Mr. Virgilio held progressively responsible positions at the NRC in reactor, radioactive materials and radioactive waste programs. As the Deputy Executive Director for Materials, Waste, Research, State, Tribal and Compliance Programs he was responsible for leading the Offices of Nuclear Regulatory Research, Enforcement, Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards, Investigations, and Federal and State Materials and Environmental Management Programs.
Mr. Virgilio has testified before the Commission and various Congressional Oversight Committees and represented the NRC in interactions with senior officials at other Federal and State Agencies, domestic organizations and members of the public. He also represented the U.S. Government in meetings domestically and abroad with international counterparts on nuclear safety matters.
Mr. Virgilio holds a B.S. in Marine Engineering from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and M.S. in Nuclear Engineering from The Catholic University of America.
