Richard Schaller has over 40 years of nuclear energy production experience including 28 years in senior management positions at Arizona Public Service Company and Illinois Power Company. He retired in 2009 and has been affiliated with Talisman International since that time.
He has held positions as Director of Plant Operations, Director of Nuclear Training, Engineering Department Leader, and Assistant Power Plant Manager at a three unit nuclear station, and he has led major special projects at nuclear stations involving budgets exceeding $100M. As a senior utility manager he acted as the primary negotiator for contracts involving the replacement of steam generators and outage management services, each with values exceeding $100M. His most recent utility project involved managing the development of the a 20 year operating license extension for the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, a project with a net present value for the utility of $11B.
Mr. Schaller has a broad background in nuclear power plant operations, engineering, management, performance assessment, and regulatory interface involving both boiling water and pressurized water nuclear reactors. He has authored and presented both technical and financial case studies in support of various projects to a variety of audiences including utility executives, state regulators and the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Mr. Schaller holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Physics (1974) and a Master of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering (1983) from the University of Illinois. He is a licensed professional engineer in the states of Illinois and Arizona, and he has held a Senior Reactor Operator License. Mr. Schaller is a graduate of the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations Senior Plant Management Course.
