Danny Smith is a Senior Principal Consultant to Talisman. He has over 30 years experience in issues related to radioactive waste and hazardous chemical management and disposal. He has worked as a consultant to the Department of Energy (DOE), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), other federal agencies, commercial firms, and in state organizations including the Texas Governor’s Office. While with the Texas Nuclear Waste Programs Office, he participated in drafting the Nuclear Waste Policy Act and amendments and developing federal and state legislation on low- level radioactive waste disposal. He also provided testimony to Congressional committees on DOE investigations for high-level waste disposal. Dr. Smith was subsequently appointed by the Governor to serve on the Texas Radiation Advisory Board providing policy, conceptual, and technical guidance to the state agency that regulated radioactive materials under the NRC Agreement State Program. Recently, Dr. Smith has provided support to the authorization and oversight panel for DOE low-level waste disposal facilities. He also served on the core team for developing the DOE Order on radioactive waste management and disposal.
In addition to extensive policy-oriented activities, Dr. Smith has performed technical work such as developing an analytical method and software for optimization for routing and scheduling of radioactive and hazardous materials shipments and also served as an NRC-licensed senior nuclear reactor operator. He has served on comprehensive DOE field assessments and investigations such as the Complex-Wide Review of DOE’s Low-Level Waste Management Environment, Safety, and Health Vulnerabilities and the Plutonium Vulnerability Assessment mandated by the President. Dr. Smith has earned a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Mississippi, a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a registered professional engineer.
